I am a 37 year old female who for the last 6 years has had more than four major long standing kidney infections. For three of those years I had no kind of insurance so I was given antibiotics and sent on my way. I was hospitalized once for three days and pumped full of antibiotics, rehydrated, and sent home. In 2002 after another big infection and the same treatment, I thought since I have insurance maybe I should try to find out what is causing the infection all the time. I began seeing a urologist after seeing the doctor and them telling me I had blood in my urine. The urologist diagnosed me with a bladder disease had me on medication for it and ran no test. I stayed on that medicine for almost a year seeing my family doctor throughout the year because of severe right flank pain, low grade fever, and I always felt sick with no energy. Well in 2004 that urologist committed suicide which made me think maybe I should go for a second opinion. Let me also add this doctor tried putting me on about four different antidepressants also. The nephrologist I was sent to after first visit also prescribed me an antidepressant paxil before running any test. I had bad reaction to paxil I went back to him he began running test found I had scarring of the kidney and 10% kidney function loss. He diagnosed me with chronic polyphrenitist and ran another test to see if it was being caused by reflux it is not. I have been on antibiotics for about a year now seems to help some but I still have a lot of pain in my right flank area and they tell me it shouldn't hurt if there is no infection. I still get a queezy stomache every now and then also. Do you think staying on antbiotics for the rest of my life is safe or do you think I should keep pushing to find out what keeps causing the infections.

- Hi,
Just my opinion. but I would keep looking for answers. Have they ever done a ct scan? I was interested esp. in your situation because you said you have scarring of your kidney.
i have had a lifetime of bladder/kidney infections..finally had a large stone.
I have right flank pain also and aching. My Uro says i have scarring and thinnning of that kidney. Says that is what is causing my pain. he can't remove the sacr tissue because of where it is and condition of my kidney. He hopes it will heal. He is a good Uro so..i am hoping too.
I would definitly keep trying to see what is causing your problems. Maybe ask around and see who people like..who has a good reputation. Good luck.
:)
